Le film fut très controversé lors de sa sortie. Se posant comme une critique de la société de consommation, il fit scandale au Festival de Cannes en 1973⁴. Hué à Cannes lors de la présentation du film, Philippe Noiret répondit aux critiques : « Nous tendions un miroir aux gens et ils n'ont pas aimé se voir dedans. C'est révélateur d'une grande connerie ».
